Commissioned works, recording, and publication of a CD, with works for guitar composed by Javier Farías, in homage to the six Latin American Literature Nobel Prize winners.

DESCRIPTION

The project Six perspectives on Latin America is a series of compositions that pay tribute to the six Latin American writers and poets who have received the Nobel Prize in Literature. These new compositions feature the classical guitar and include some of the most important performers on the international scene, including: Eliot Fisk, Ben Verdery, Ricardo Cobo and David Tanenbaum among many others. Special guests are: Andy Summers (guitarist of The Police); jazz fusion guitarist Mike Stern; YOA Orchestra of the Americas; Cuarteto Latinoamericano and Sergio and Odair Assad (To be confirmed).

The Literature Nobel Prize winners are: Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda (Chile), Miguel Ángel Asturias (Guatemala), Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia), Octavio Paz (Mexico) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Peru). Their narratives blend cultural perspectives, thoughts and visions about the identity, origin and future of Latin America. Furthermore, throughout 2015 we will celebrate the poet, Gabriela Mistral and the 70th anniversary of her winning the Nobel Prize; the first ever writer from that continent to do so. Six perspectives on Latin America pays homage to this significant event.

The new compositions featuring works for the classical guitar and other instruments will expose and explain to audiences the important role the guitar has played in defining Latin American culture; revealing the hybrid blend that has been occurring since the arrival of the instrument more than five hundred years ago.

OBJECTIVES

Latin American literature has transcended the limits of the continent becoming a part of the Humanities study in the most important educational institutions around the world. Within this array it is crucial to acknowledge the high value of Latin America as the hybrid matrix of a culture that influences our way of thinking, speaking, and behaving, through the expression of music, literature and poetry.

This project pays tribute to those writers that have represented their own visions of our lands and culture through their written work. To value their important contributions and make sure that their legacy is not lost in the new generations to come is intended in this homage.
